Green Bean Bliss

It is Saturday—and we all know what that means: Recipe Day! I can just feel the enthusiasm that this weekly sojourn into the land of the culinary elicits, but I persevere. I bought some lovely frozen full size green beans and am going to roast them in the oven using a rendition of a recipe from Food.com.  Here is the original recipe:

Roasted Green Beans

2 lbs. green beans
1 -2 tablespoon olive oil (or just enough to lightly coat beans)
1 teaspoon kosher salt (or to taste, may substitute with Mrs. Dash if desired)
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper (or to taste, omit if using Mrs. Dash)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Wash, dry well, and trim green beans.
Put green beans on a jelly roll pan.  Drizzle with olive oil.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste (1 1/2 teaspoons of salt and about 8-10 grinds of the pepper mill). *Mrs. Dash may be substituted for salt and pepper as desired.
Use your hands to be sure all the beans are evenly coated and spread them out into 1 layer.
Roast for 20-25 minutes, turning after 15 minutes, until beans are fairly brown in spots and somewhat shrivelled.
Serve hot or at room temperature.

Of course I will not be using the original recipe as I will be using frozen green beans—so no washing, drying, and trimming will be necessary, which suits this lazy cook to a T.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday! (Photo credit: KP_Sonny)

I am going to use this recipe for a little birthday dinner party I am throwing tomorrow night for my husband, whose birthday was last Thursday, but he has a birthday month  not day, so this is just a continuation of the celebrations (and for exactly one month he is older than I am).

I may just add some parmesan cheese to the mix to add just a little touch of bliss.

What do you add to recipes for a touch of bliss, even if they do not call for it?

  1. Chilli?

    • I love any form of chili, the spice, the dish, add it to just about anything but brownies

  2. LouAnn,
I add garlic in almost virtually anything… Actually, I might just sprinkle some on my cereals right now.
    Le Clown
    PS: Or cinnamon.

    • garlic – I add it to everything too–thanks for the heads up!

I add cinnamon to what I can to my husband’s food–it helps diabetics–he told me to stop putting it on his steak though

  3. I love adding tarragon, especially to chicken, but it’s good on veggies too!

    • I love tarragon- thank you for reminding me of this –I especially love it with tomatoes and what the heck is that long green summer squash–its names has escaped me–over rice

  4. LouAnn,
I love roasting vegetables and green beans a very good roasted. We also like roasting fresh asparagus in a very similar way to your recipe. I do a little hotter oven (450) for a shorter time – about 10 minutes. And I love putting lemon zest on the asparagus after it comes out of the oven. Lemon zest or Meyer lemon oil is also great on your roasted green beans!

    • lemon – that sounds good–and I love roasted asparagus–I can eat it like candy

    • I was going to say the same thing and was just reading the other comments first! I do this with asparagus too, but instead of lemon zest, I use a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and put it on before roasting.

      • I love asparagus done this way but have never done it with green beans–going to have to remember the lemon trick- thanks

  5. Even thought I don’t have a kitchen at the moment, my oven is still plugged in and when you said “Frozen Green Beans” I was hooked! Now I have to wait until the Easter Bunny has come and gone from our local grocery store to get some green beans!
My cousin’s wife gave me a jar of Susie Q’s Santa Maria Valley Style seasoning

a couple months ago and put that on almost everything it is a mixture of salt, garlic, sugar and pepper and is supposed to be healthier than regular salt.
I have not tried it on cereal Le Clown!

  6. Cheese. Always cheese. Too funny,my husband is almost exactly one month older than me and I never cease to remind him of that.

    • and we have to do it a lot–cause we only have a month

cheese is my answer to my cooking mistakes

  7. Whenever I roast vegetables, I always add rosemary. Roasted green beans are one of my favorites, and the rest of my family doesn’t like them too much, so when I make them, I get them all.

  8. I don’t add to recipes…because my mother always did and it rarely turned out very well….

I have to say, we must be in some kind of strange sync with each other because just yesterday a friend of mine was talking about this very recipe. Now, she loves food, usually very dramatic about it, but she said these green beans were To. Die. For. So good luck, and I hope you love them. I need to go buy some green beans. Mine usually come out of a can.

    • I generally buy frozen for some reason–glad to hear the testimonial — will definitely be trying them tomorrow

  9. So how does it turn out with frozen beans? I’ve never used frozen in a recipe for fresh. I have a great recipe for green beans which involves bacon, oil, and a frying pan 🙂 but I would love it if I could use frozen beans.

    • Will tell you after tomorrow’s dinner — these are beautiful green beans –not all cut up but whole–anything with bacon has to be good

      • Oh, those long ones–I’ve bought those before. Let me know how it goes with yours. I do love roast vegetables.

  10. As I have probably mentioned …now my husband does the most cooking…and he loves garlic powder on most things that he can add it to….We’ve done green beans on the barbecue wrapped in aluminum foil with the olive oil and salt and pepper..Diane

  11. Bacon. Everything is better with bacon.

I’ve never tried roasted beans – something for me to remember when the garden starts to produce. I did try roasted broccoli for the first time last night after reading rave reviews of it online.

    • I am going to try it and my sister says that roasted cauliflower is wonderful–and yes-everything is better with bacon and if you have a Shoppers Drug Mart close it is on sale for 2.99!

  12. I just love a drizzle of oyster sauce on my green beans – bliss 😀

  13. I’ve noticed folks have already mentioned bacon. I wrap bacon around 5 green beans and then roast. I call them green bean bundles. I drizzle the bundles with a little olive oil salt and pepper.

  14. garlic and sugar on peas, honey on corn

    • those sound unique and good once you get your mind around it–the peas sound good, not so sure about the corn — thanks for your input

  15. Happy birthday to your husband my friend 😀
And LOVE these beans, only way my mum can feed me veggies 😉

    Cheers
    CCU

  16. Thank you so much for linking to my recipe for the green bean stir-fry! You have a very nice blog. One time I made a recipe where you toss green beans in Dijon mustard, a little olive oil, and tarragon and then roasted them. It was delicious!

  17. You and Piper are always on the same wave length. Green beans are her favorite and she’ll eat anything with parmesan sprinkled on top. We like to roast them with fennel.

  18. Hmmmm. This one has distinct possibilities! Sounds good! And thanks for sharing.

    • sounds good doesn’t it, and many of the commenters have wonderful suggestions

  19. Mmmm. I have never seen “green bean” and “bliss” in the same sentence before, but it works.
