Lake Erie in the winter

Lake Erie in the winter (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I have lived in the charming town of Kingsville, Ontario on Lake Erie for…a long time.  I am a freelance writer for the newspaper that I once worked for as a full-time reporter/photographer/columnist. Today I am a columnist and municipal reporter, magazine writer, poet of little merit, songwriter of sorts, and aspiring writer of books.  Still working out the timing of my stand up comedy routine, I am destined to serve it up on the page and not the stage.  Some of the things you will read in this blog are from my weekly newspaper column but I promise never to include any of my articles about town council. Though absolutely fascinating and good fodder for the bottom of birdcages, the less said about sewers and drains and riled up residents the better.

I have been married to my husband John for 34 years and we have two wonderful, smart and handsome sons, Adam, 30 and Tyler, 25.  Adam is a rock god (soon to be a world renowned lead guitarist) and basketball aficionado and Tyler is my computer savvy clever (about to set the world on fire) business marketing graduate.  Over the years they have appeared in my columns so often that they no longer read them—so that when they meet someone “on the street” who has read about them, they feign ignorance.  Oh yeah, and we have a cat called Kitty Bob who sometimes gets a column or two devoted to him. I mention the cat as he is a much beloved family member, who would be missed more than I, if he took a train to Austin and did not come back.

I began my writing “career” at the tender age of 10. My first story was a composition for a grade five literature exam and my teacher liked it (she really liked it!).  I “honed” my craft a little more at university, where I was taught by hippies, poets, (it was the 70’s) and strict grammarians.  Some of it stuck; some of it didn’t.

  1. Loved your post “Milestone in the Mind of the Beholder.” The same realization hit me this year: that it isn’t the age that bothers us, but where we are and where we want to be at that point in our life, or in other words, is our reality matching up with our expectations.

    • I thought I had replied to you–but maybe I missed it or did not send it correctly. Like your observation that it is not our age but where we are that concerns us–very astute

  2. Thanks for visiting my blog & liking my post.

  3. I enjoyed your comments about my books. I hope they help you! If you ever have any questions feel free to e-mail me. Good luck!

    • How exciting to be contacted by you– be assured I will have questions–thank you so much

  4. Oh so cute picturing Kitty Bob, the cat, taking a train to Austin! 🙂

    • Kitty Bob would have the conductors eating out of the palm of his paw in no time.

  5. Thanks for stopping by and I am glad you enjoyed the poem: Blocked
    Léa

  6. Thank you for dropping in.

  7. Thank you for visiting my blog and deciding to keep an eye on my three pleasing things each day. 🙂
I wrote as a child too but my life went a different way. Now I write only about 100 words each day on my blog!
I shall enjoy following your writings 🙂

  8. one hundred words a day is a good goal–will keep an eye on you

  9. I love this line… “Still working out the timing of my stand up comedy routine, I am destined to serve it up on the page and not the stage.” I have 2 cats (and 2 dogs and 4 gerbils) and they are important, so I understand mentioning Kitty Bob. 🙂

    • I must mention my cat as he is the most important part of my family–at least to the three men in my life. Seriously they would miss the cat more than me–people think I am just joking when I say this. Actually the cat would miss me most of all, ’cause I feed it. I like that you like that line–

  10. I saw that you stopped by my blog so I wanted to say hello. Any writer that has an “Organizing 101” tab wins my heart. So far, you are the only one I’ve found that does!

    maryrose

    • I matter, unless of course, I threaten to get rid of the family cat, Kitty Bob, who matters more

  22. Thank you for following my blog. I loved your post about Ray Bradbury. Your blog has a great feeling to it.

  23. Things I Learn from E-mail – isn’t it great? I have a few friends that send lots of emails re humor, art, spiritual, videos, and FYI. They help Make My Day. Of course I can’t delete them till I’ve read them, therefore, I have over 1,000 emails (most of them from my two informative friends). 🙂

    • your friends are more than prolific aren’t they – the emails I don’t like are the ones that want you to forward something or else you will die or have bad luck for the rest of your life

  24. thank you for liking our father’s day post. your blog is-well it’s always hard to find the right words to compliment a writer-but it is just so lovely. your father’s day post made me think of dan fogelburgs Leader of the Band-a song that always makes me think of my dad, who wasn’t a musician but loved music. it always makes me cry no matter where i might be so i’m always relieved when its the radio and not the check out counter at the grocery store. happy fathers day to your father and mine. we look forward to following your blog.

    • look forward to following yours too – it is hard isn’t it when something reminds you so strongly of someone you lost – although we really didn’t lose them did we–they are in our hearts

  25. i love how clean your site is. and i think we write similarly. i, too started ‘writing’ at 10 years old. i have 14 journals. i love going back and reading them! write on lou ann – i will be visiting you often!

    PeAce!

  29. I want to click “like” under so many of your posts – but no clickies! Can only find this one?? I like your post on quotes – quotes are so thought-provoking.

    • There should be likes – I think you may have to hit the comments up at the top of the post – I will look at it–but thanks so much for liking me here

  30. I like what you are “about”. I always liked writing but never did anything serious with it until recently…since retiring from my nursing career. I now have more of an opportunity to write as I have always wanted to do. Hope to be reading a lot more of your post.

    • Thought I had replied, but if you get two, ignore whichever one you want to. Retiring from nursing – a demanding career – hope you enjoy your days writing. Have checked out your blog and will be visiting regularly.

  31. I love what you write. And I love your “About” page! I still haven’t gone through a lot of your posts but I’m gonna sit down and go through them now 🙂 I’m glad we connected 🙂

  32. LouAnn,
Thanks for following my blog. You have quite the resume. I am impressed by the 30 years of marriage and look forward to when I can claim the same. I will be visiting again to check out what you have to share.
    Gail

    • Thanks Gail – will be visiting you too. 30 years of marriage – as my husband says, it seems like only yesterday.

  33. Thanks for visiting my blog today. I am leaving my fingerprint to say I’ve called back and will definitely be back again in the future!

  34. Hi…I read several of your blog posts; but couldn’t find anywhere to leave a comment about them. I am not sure if you want that part turned on in your profile choices or not. I enjoy hearing from people like you and what they think about my weekly blogging topic.
Thanks for following my blog. You Matter! Smiles, Nancy

    • I think the comment thingamajig is up near the title of the article – and is a number–that is what it looks like on my blog. Thank you for taking the time to drop in-I am enjoying your blog.

      • Oh! Duh! Thanks…right in front of my face. I’m enjoying your Blog too. You Matter! Smiles, Nancy

      • it seems to be different on every blog

  37. With laughter being the Best Medicine, you are a Great Healer! I am finally signing on!

    • Welcome aboard – been enjoying your blog. Thank you for the compliment – laughter is what gets us through sometimes isn’t it

  38. Just read your “Angel Hide” and loved it! I hope you do manage to drive little further away from your house though.

    • In my neck of the woods, a 20 mile radius spans several towns–so it is not as bad as it sounds. I think by keeping my driving to a minimum I am doing man and womankind a great service.

  39. I wanted to leave a comment on your post about the joys of blogging in pyjamas (dressing gown in my case) but there doesn’t seem to be a comment box so I’ll leave it here instead. I think the main case for blogging lies in the ‘compact and bijou’ nature of the writing you can do there. I love the fact that I can say a little and hopefully make someone smile or nod and there is no pressure except that which I choose to place on myself. I’ve become quite the blog addict in recent months!

    • The place to comment is a number up near the title of the blog – but I am glad you took the time to comment even if it was difficult. I think you are righ about the nature of blogging – it is contagious isn’t it.

  40. I’ve been enjoying your blog a lot and have nominated you for a couple blog awards! If you’re interested you can visit: http://ltclifeonhigh.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/the-love-just-goes-on-and-on/

      • sorry, I looked at the pic and it is a winter picture – I too wish we could have some of that winter Lake Erie air – duh!

      • I was responding to the winter image of frozen Lake Erie…are your summers usually this hot?

      • Yes, I went back and looked at the pic and it is a winter scene – and yes we always have hot and humid summers

  56. I love your introduction. Thanks for stopping by my blog, and point out a word “begging” to be corrected! 😀

    • I so hate being corrected and really hesitated, but the rest of your stuff was so perfect I did not want it to be marred by that — usually I don’t make corrections because it just does not seem worthwhile – with yours it was well worth it

  57. I enjoyed reading this.. you have me thinking I should have an about page.. I keep going back and forth on this.
Lovely to meet you, thanks to Brigitte. She has done it again!

    • glad to meet you too – I found doing the About was not all that easy but worthwhile in the end

  58. Greetings, fellow Canadian!

    • Nice to run into another Canadian

      • Yeah there don’t appear to be many on here that I’ve run across. Anyway, glad to meet and follow you, you came highly recommended via unfetteredbs.

      • I just love referrals — the blog world is so friendly

      • It really is, but holy geez, do you not sleep? I think I read that you’re in Ontario, so it must be like 4 am your time. I have a good excuse at least – screaming baby. Maybe your excuse is the same, or other, no matter. Anyway, pleased to meet you.

      • it is a terrible and good thing, waking up so early–I am past the screaming baby stage and into the calls late at night early in the morning from my youngest son who is at college
really must learn to sleep in–I wake up and that is it–I have to get up
        Pleased to meet you too

  66. Hi – thanks for visiting me at http://ja2da.com – guess what? I’ve actually been to Ontario! Admittedly, it was about a hundred (well, 20 maybe – hmm. . make that 30) years ago.
Loved your chatty style and the fact that you actually have words and not just pictures you pinched from somewhere else.
    David
