Just wondering….

Philosophy: An Introduction to the Art of Wond...

Have you ever looked at something

then someone else looked at the same something,

and you both saw something different—

So different that it did not even seem like you were looking

At the same thing?

Just wondering…..

Perception

Is a mysterious thing.

  1. Indeed.

  2. Perception is interesting. Do you believe perception reality?

  3. All the time, just like that drawing that could be either an old woman or a young woman all dressed up, once you see it one way it’s so hard to find the other option

  4. Same thing with listening. Sometimes we hear something different than the person sitting next to us. ?

  5. Happens a lot….remember that statue we saw at Cindy’s? You said it was two people and I thought it was a clown face….lol

  6. All the time :) . Maybe you should do a blog post about Rorschach’s inkblot test and see how many different perceptions of the inkblots there are from your followers.

  7. Completely agree. I think perception is really subjective and individualistic… like when my sister and I used to fight, both of us remember the fights completely differently. Go figure.

  8. And the thing we have to remember about perception is that someone else’s perception is their reality and it can’t be wrong.

  9. Happens all the time at work with email, which is not really what you were talking about, except perception. Nobody every reads anything the same way.

    • you make a very good point–and even the comments we leave are sometimes perceived differently than we meant them

  10. Absolutely – clouds are a great example of this ;)

  11. This is why I don’t want my brother to read my childhood memory blogs!!

  12. :-) Is that a trick question? :-) You want to find out, if I can figure out what you are asking? I’m laughing, for my career job involoved the perception of how some of our clients viewed the various aspects of life. As in delusions.

Truly one never can predict how someone might perceive your spoken words, behavior, etc. etc. I believe this is how people are often judged, etc. So, dear lady, in closing :-) my perception of your blog (no you did not ask for that.I’m just acting stupid) is that you maintain an excellent level of dignity and that you get lots of feed back/comments if you pose a question. And yes, perception is a mysterious thing. Now I am “done” commenting. I mean through, commenting. No,I mean finished, commenting!

Now what is your perception of my ramblings? :-) I could not resist playing with your question. It is an excellent post today. I like the perception question.

    • my perception of your ramblings is that you are someone who takes the time to understand a post and comment intelligently and with heart–always love to see you here and love being described as dignified

      • I am so glad that you approved of my perceptions, Truly your column/blog is an excellent one. It never hurts to try to stretch your readers brains a bit. :-)

      • and mine! :)

  13. the one that fools me all the time is the black and white picture – sometimes I see the face profiles and other times I see the vase.. no it’s a face… no its a vase!

  14. So true! Perception is a mysterious thing!

    • it most certainly is – if we could solve that mystery we would be golden

      • Smiles! We probably are golden already; only perception blurs our view and creates mystery out of the plain. Who knows? :)

      • sometimes we need mystery but not enough to cause drama

      • I love that! And ofcourse, I agree with you. :)

  15. Sorry, Lou Ann, I immediately thought of my marriage. Two people looking at the same thing and seeing something different. I know it’s not what you meant, but I think the idea of perception fits this as well. Maybe perception, in all cases, has to do with the experiences we’ve accumulated up until that point. It’s hard to see something that you have no reference for.
I like this post. Very good. :)

    • it was sort of about my marriage too–we had a bit of a disagreement last night

      • haha! I hope it got ironed out.

      • yes, we talked it over this morning–and we are in a much better place, but I still stand behind that observation

  16. How about hearing the same thing? Last night I went to a live show and the singing was so loud I thought my eardrums would burst! The audience, however, seemed blissfully happy. :( Do I have extra sensory hearing or what?

    • I am the same way you are–if something is loud I do not enjoy it at all–then I look around me and others do not seem to notice.

  17. We all seem to view the world just a little differently, which keeps life interesting.

  18. denise got up one morning and saw a bike leaning against a tree in her front yard. she thought her son had ridden someone else’s bike home and just left it there. she called him and scolded him for being careless with someone else’s possession. the reality was someone had peddled up on a bike and stolen his car. she saw the bike-he saw the missing car.
