I found  a unique definition of the word “respect” courtesy of Winston Churchill. He is purported to have said:

“I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.”

  1. I never thought about how pigs see us. Good quote

  2. I like this quote….
and I agree with you, Miss Piggy probably doesn’t
(maybe she is part cat? LOls)

    • thank you – our cat reigns supreme at my house – so I think you are right–Ms. Piggy may be part cat!

  3. Well… as a former pig farmer’s daughter and a former pig farmer’s wife and for a while a pig farmer’s mother….. I agree! And I ought to know!

    • It is nice to get this, if not straight from the pig’s mouth, at least from someone who knows pigs!

  4. That’s just odd.

  5. Great quote from a great man 🙂

    Cheers

  6. Pigs might see us as silly, all dressed up in our clothes even when it is in the head of summer and we are sweating, instead of wallowing in the cool soft mud of the land.

  7. Pigs are supposed to be very smart animals. Probably smarter than many humans. But I still love cats best. They keep a person from getting too uppity.

    • the three males who live in this house would agree heartily with you — they would be sadder if the cat left than if I did

  8. I’m not so sure pigs see us as equals…. I think they know we do what we are told!! 😉

  9. Sitting on a fence watching pigs makes for grand entertainment.

  10. Slightly off topic, sorta, kinda, not really, is the strange Beatles song written my George Harrison . . . “Piggies.” Here is an youtube link.

    • love it – little piggies living their piggy lives — maybe the British have a special rapport with piggies!

  11. Oink!

  12. That sounds about right. I like dogs but I find it hard to respect them because of their neediness.

    • I only have a cat who likes to eat all the time–that is all he needs me for but having said that he does indicate that he likes us

  13. I have to say, I don’t understand what’s up with Americans and our interest in pigs — specifically our obsession with bacon — over the last few years.

But from this quote, I can see that obviously Americans have had a thing for pigs for a long time.

Having said that, I used to know a family that raised pigs. They stank to high hell, and they seemed to know it was wise to take their food when it was offered but never miss an opportunity to try to escape.

    • My next door neighbour when I was a kid had pigs and I do remember the barn smell not being all that wonderful — but I remember finding the piglets so cute

  14. You are right, it is a unique definition of respect….kinda quirky, makes you think and re read the quote a couple of times. I think this quote would make interesting chit chat at a dinner party. I’ll use and let you know.

    • I’ll use it and let you know…..keyboard blip;)

    • ha ha – I can imagine how it would go “my dog loves me, my cat rules me, and my pig, well, my pig will sit down and have a real one-on-one with me”

  15. As a former farm girl, I wonder where he;d put cows in the schema. You can’t herd pigs like you can cows. 🙂

  16. Dear Old Winston Churchill was also devoted to his cat, who slept on the bed with him

  17. Great quote from a man who knew what he was talking about! 🙂

  18. Churchill always had such a wonderful way with words. I like to call his style “The plain, damn truth.” 🙂

  19. Thanks for sharing this wisdom!

  20. My choir teacher has just started keeping piggies! She loves them! Good quote but I still love cats the best! 🙂
